Effect of Transient Congenital Hypothyroidism on Oxidative Stress in Cardiac Tissue of Adult Male Rats
Introduction: Increased oxidative stress is involved in the pathology of cardiovascular disease. Transient congenital hypothyroidism (TCH) leads to a variety of heart disorders during adulthood. In this study, the effect of TCH on antioxidant and oxidant systems in the serum and left cardiac ventricle of adult male rats was investigated. Materials and Methods: TCH was induced by administrating ...
متن کاملIs Hypothyroidism Overlooked in Cardiac Surgery Patients?
Objectives: To analyze adequacy of preoperative thyroid screening of cardiac surgery patients (pts) with hypothyroidism (HT) and compare with pts without HT by demographic data, EuroSCORE (ES) scores, early and late outcomes. Patients: From 1000 cardiac surgery pts from Jan 1999 through May 2000 pts with HT were identified (Group 1, n = 80). 920 pts (Group 2) had no HT. Results: Group 1 pts wer...
متن کاملTransient hyperthyroidism after surgery for secondary hyperparathyroidism: a common problem
BACKGROUND Postoperative hyperthyroidism occurs in approximately one third of patients following parathyroidectomy due to primary hyperparathyroidism (PHP), but has only rarely been described in secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHP). The frequency, course, and laboratory markers of postoperative hyperthyroidism in SHP remain unknown. Our purpose was to evaluate the frequency and the clinical cour...
متن کاملTransient hypothyroidism after withdrawal of thyroxin therapy.
Continued administration of large doses of thyroid may not produce hyperthyroidism in euthyroid individuals. Cessation of prolonged high-dosage thyroid replacement can cause transient clinical and biochemical hypothyroidism owing to pituitary suppression. A case is recorded in which both these phenomena are well demonstrated. This case highlights these basic endocrinological principles.
متن کاملHis-Purkinje conduction findings after cardiac surgery in children.
Conduction abnormalities of the His-Purkinje (HP) system are common sequelae of surgical repair of heart defects. Standard electrophysiologic recordings may fail to demonstrate abnormalities of the HP system when routine intervals are measured. When the conduction system is stressed, certain HP features that may indicate latent conduction disease within the HP system can be revealed. These feat...
